An animated film I've been long anticipating is playing this Saturday and Sunday at the IFC theater (11 am both days) I've been following the production blog for The Secret of Kells for quite some time. It sounds like it will get a wider release, but why not help give it a little push?

I also got my copies of Walt Stanchfield's Disney lectures yesterday. The two volumes are much heftier than I expected and FULL of awesome drawings and instruction. A lot of this is available on the web for free, but I'm the sort who likes to hold things in my hand and flip through them rather than stare at the computer more than I need to.

Any artist, whether an animator or not, can't help but benefit from this legend's teaching of gesture. I'm looking forward to getting into chapter 2 before life drawing this evening.

I'm meeting up with a bunch of people to see the NY Philharmonic in Central Park tonight. Give me a call if you want to join us!
I'll be in the city around 5.

I just got two volumes of Walt Stanchfield's Disney lectures in the mail this morning. These things weigh a ton and already I can see how much drawing knowledge is crammed into them.

Sketchcrawl #23 was Saturday. I got to Central Park around 12 and did a ink sketch and watercolor painting (my favorite of the day) from the overpass at 110th and CPW. A trip to the art store last week ended with 4 new tubes of watercolor paint and a new sketchbook. I had intended to buy a new moleskine, but opted for this little sketchbook instead...cheaper, more pages and it takes a wash pretty well without buckling.

Jose showed up and we met up with the rest of the group, totalling seven. We continued on to the Great Hill where a Jazz festival was taking place. They didn't get started until almost 2, but there were plenty of people in the crowd to sketch.

I posted some drawings from Asifa over here. Sorry for the link, it's too much work to upload them to flickr and then blog them. ;)

I picked up about 4 new tubes of watercolor paint Wednesday and did some studies with them last night. It's been a while since I've had time to paint, so it was nice. I just ordered a copy of Bill Cone's pastel book from a show he had in Northern California. I'm so excited, his work just blows my mind.

I'm thinking about baking some bread today, even though we have so many leftovers from eating with Allan's family while they were visiting. I've also been drooling over some of the dishes on this website. I got some zucchini, carrots, peaches and cherries at the green market Wednesday, so we'll see what I make in the next day or so.

I'm looking forward to Sketchcrawl tomorrow! I haven't been to Central Park since early spring! Also Allan has a table at the first Asian American Comic Con tomorrow where I'll be stopping to visit later in the day.

Sketchcrawl #23 is this Saturday July 11th. A group is meeting at 9:15 at the Met or draw where you wish until 1 pm when everyone will be meeting up at Central Park Jazz Festival at the entrance to the park at 106th St and CPW. I'll also be heading down to the Asian American Comic Con in Chinatown later that afternoon to visit Allan's table.

My gig of 2 months ended last week, so now I have more free time to draw. Hopefully I'll have a link up soon for the web project I was art directing, but for now here's another paper bag drawing.

Last week I also had time to do some baking, which I haven't done much of since moving to our new place in December. I broke in my Ikea cookie cutters and made a batch of Rosemary Apricot Sandwich cookies. They're so tasty!

4th of July fun!

Also, here's the rest of my photos from the second picnic I went to on the 4th. I was having too much fun in the pool at the first picnic and didn't take ANY photos! Hope everyone had a great weekend!

There was a meme somewhere to draw yourself at 100 years old. I drew Allan too, 'cause what fun would it be being old without Allan? We'd have a hover car and sidecar with built in futuristic wacom screens, tea/coffee holders, and cat carrier.

When I was visiting my Mom last weekend, she unearthed this archaeological relic: My first recorded mini comic.

Crafted of orange construction paper and ballpoint pen at age 7, it is a revealing look at my Moms pregnancy. I think the most hilarious part (aside from my awesome anatomy) is that it's the same dimensions as my Counter Attack minis.

You can read the whole comic here. There is some commentary I added as notes in Flickr. Scroll over the images to see it.

Subject:MoCCA recap!
Security:Public

There're already quite a few MoCCA reviews online, and I'm adding mine to the mix. First off, the week started off pretty stressful for me only because I'm juggling so many work projects at once. MoCCA was sadly last on my list of worries. Luckily, our last minute print stress was alleviated by Allan's awesome friend Jon, who did our prints last year as well. The amazing crew at the Village Copier printed out my portfolio for a mere 99 cents a sheet, had it back to me that day, and it looked excellent. They also didn't give me crap when I discovered later that night they'd missed 3 pages and were able to print them out while I was on my lunch break. Once all that was out of the way, I was really looking forward to the weekend.

My full photo set is here.

Also, I found out today that I was mentioned in Time Out NY's preview of MoCCA! How awesome!

Allan and I will be attending our second MoCCA art festival on Saturday June 6th and Sunday June 7th from 11am- 6pm.

This year it's being held at the 69th Regiment Armory at 68 Lexington Avenue, between 25th and 26th Streets. We'll be at table 315.

Here're some of the new things I'll have for sale. No, not Fidget, just the books and postcards.

Stop by, say hello, and maybe grab a treat brought all the way from Flushing!

Ballpoint pen and colored pencil

When I'm not sure what to draw, I don't look much further than out the window. Today was one of those days. I've drawn the view from each of my apartments or dorm rooms since I entered college. Maybe I'll look through my sketchbooks at some point and post some of the old ones.

It's been a while since I've posted any art here. I did this illustration for the nice folks over at the 14th St Y a few weeks ago. They sent the postcards out to the parents of Manhattan, advertising their summer programs.

Listening to the CD mix I got in the mail the other day has made my rainy day better. (Thanks again, Bonnie!) I hate that mental fog that comes with the flu. The days are running together and I can't even type straight. Hopefully I'll be able to recall the awesome parts of my birthday weekend that occurred before Sunday so I can accurately journal them. :)

Subject:A spring day in Flushing

Yesterday I decided that it was too nice out to spend the entire day indoors. I went outside for a walk around 4 armed with my camera and a sketchbook. Had I known how far my wandering would take me, I would have worn sneakers.

I started off a few short blocks from my building where I'd heard about a historic house at the edge of a park. I was surprised to see that there was also a little garden of trees lining the gate.

some photos of my walk )
Other things I got done yesterday:

-I got some pretty paper from the city a few days ago and used it to cover the inside of a cabinet door by my computer and to line the transclucent drawers containing my art supplies. It looks snazzy!

-signed up for and paid my first two months of health and dental insurance through the Freelancer's Union!

-got work on Monday doing some style frames for a web project that's been milling around since the fall.

-Framed more art. Ready to hang it today!

-Used my new $1 Ramekins from Pier 1 to make some delicious brown butter plum cakes with 2 once shriveled plums.

Yep, Friday was good.

Letterman Jacket Guy- Man those hispanic girls were such a stereotype.
Long Island Girl Friend- Yeah, they all had the same tattoos.
Letterman Jacket Guy- Really? Maybe they're in a gang.

Then these two proceeded to get off at Willet's Point for the Mets game.

I wanted to scream "Who's the stereotype NOW?!"

I have joined the Freelancer's Union. Now lets see if they approve my application for their health insurance plan! Now I'm putting off doing my taxes again. But I will do them today! Oh yes!

I got a lot of other errands done yesterday. It was a lovely spring day in the city and I'm glad I brought my camera along.

I love that they put these little plazas in around the Flatiron building. It used to be a street-crossing nightmare and now it's a pedestrian wonderland.

It seemed like there was an extra amount of sky.

Walking through Madison Square Park, it reminded me of London. Some days I like feeling like a tourist in my own city.

I'm usually moving too quickly to even look up.

A squirrel stopping to smell...the sprinkler?

They don't make 'em like they used to.

Evening commute to Penn Station.
